Genome Informatics (PhD Student)
The Institute of Genetic Epidemiology at the Medical University of Innsbruck has an exciting job opportunity. We are looking to extend our Genome Informatics team with a PhD-Student who has a strong interest in Bioinformatics and High-Performance Computing.
The candidate works within 4 years on Machine Learning Techniques to improve Polygenic Risk Score Prediction. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) represent a novel approach in the field of genetics, to improve understanding of complex traits and diseases influenced by multiple genetic factors. Unlike single-gene analyses, PRS summarize information from numerous genetic variants scattered across an individual’s genome to generate a comprehensive risk assessment. This thesis investigates innovative approaches to integrate advanced computational methods for more precise risk estimation and early detection of genetic predispositions.
Our group has a strong commitment to open-science and creating widely used resources and software tools (e.g. Michigan Imputation Server and nf-test).
Requirements:
- M.Sc. in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or related field
- Experience in the analysis of large-scale, primarily genetic data
- Good knowledge of at least one programming language (Java, R and/or Python)
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of interdisciplinary teams
Desirable skills:
- Experience with workflow management programs and computational pipelines (e.g. Nextflow or Snakemake), or a strong desire to learn these skills
- Experience with Linux and bash scripting, or a strong desire to learn these skills
- Experience with genome-wide association studies and polygenic risk scores, or enthusiasm for learning about them
What we offer
- An international and highly multidisciplinary research environment consisting of bioinformaticians and statisticians as well as support from High-Performance Computing facilities.
- Possible collaborations with the University of Michigan and other institutions
- Dynamic team where collaboration and mutual respect are valued, fostering a positive and appreciative work environment
How to apply
Applications should be submitted via email to Lukas Forer. To be considered, all applicants must submit
- Cover letter and a statement summarizing your research interests and motivation (max 1 page)
- Curriculum vitae
- If available: list of publications or a reference project
